I’m a 21 year old student at the University of Pittsburgh.
I like thinking, and I like computers.
This blog has a number of purposes.
- I want to have a place to discuss philosophical topics. I am obsessed with virtue, and I will be discussing these issues here (more on this below).
- I feel obliged to share how I have implemented my various thoughts on virtue in my life (or, sadly, how I may have failed).
- Also, I want to have a place to share humorous, useful, or interesting things that I find. Sometimes I find amazing things online, and I wish I could share them with everyone.
- To a lesser extent, I want to have a place to communicate with friends and family about goings on.
Philosophical topics:
A few years back, I was reading a certain specific book, and this book set my mind free. I began to ask a great number of questions, such as:
• Why do people in our nation take all the great opportunities given to us for granted?
• Why do so many in the United States choose not to vote come election time, whenever so many have given their lives for such a right?
• Are these problems culturally specific, or are well-to-do humans naturally prone to cheapening the things that they are given.
• If this is a tendency, how can this tendency be curbed?
• Or; how can humans shine without having to go through tremendous hardship?
None of these questions are spectacular in themselves. However, I still feel that they are worth thinking about.
These questions lead me on a quest for virtue. What have people thought about virtue in the past? How may I attain it? Is it even worth thinking about at all?
Some consider virtue to be a simple question of religion. The trouble is, Christianity doesn’t cover a number of questions, and these questions are hard to decide upon using simple biblical principal.
For example,
Is it worthwhile to pursue the arts? If so, which ones? How much?
Is it still worthwhile to pursue the arts if one does not want to this as an occupation?
How can one understand “physical excellence”? Is it worth pursuing? To what extent should it be pursued?
What about the Sciences?
Is there an ideal “mix” of these good qualities, and if there is, how can one find it?
I doubt that I will ever be able to adequately answer these questions, but I hope to consider them all throughout this website.
I plan to compile the blog entries into larger, better-organized pages on various topics where appropriate.
